Paragliding in Brazil: October – November 2015

In late 2015, a group of paragliding enthusiasts — Petr, Martin, Radar, and Libor — embarked on an adventurous paragliding trip to Brazil. What started as a minor delay due to missing gear and parachutes quickly turned into a relaxing start to their trip. For several days, the team found themselves lounging by the pool and enjoying Brazil’s local rum, a rather enjoyable wait before the flying could truly begin.

Flying Achievements

The flights were always one-way due to the strong winds and required efficient use of the speed system right after takeoff. The group often made their way back via motorcycle, cars, or local buses, and sometimes their own vehicle if someone was willing to come and pick them up. Quixadá – The Main Playground
Quixadá served as the main base for the majority of their flying days. The launch area was often crowded with other paragliders, and as the wind picked up, the queue shortened, as not everyone could handle the intense conditions. The team was lodged on a hilltop with a pool, enjoying the occasional trip into town, but the focus remained on the flying.

Patu, while scenic, was very dusty, adding another layer of challenge to the already rough terrain. The team’s paraglider canopies endured a fair amount of wear and tear, with the ever-present dust and the occasional tumble at takeoff adding to the challenges.

Adventures on the Ground
The group had rented a car for the trip, using it to reach takeoff points and for their side trip to Patu. On one memorable occasion, they even punctured the car’s tire under the launch site. Not ones to waste any time, and ever conscious of distance records, they quickly set what might be a world record for changing a spare tire, determined to get back into the air as soon as possible.
